THIS week, many products went live. There was the ordering of Windows Surface Tablet, which is Microsoft’s entry to the growing tablets market. A few days after, Microsoft announced that they already sold all their release stocks. Then came the new mini iPad, which, at 7.9 inches, is a smaller and thinner version of Apple’s iconic tablet brand. It seemed to get pretty good response even if it was considered slightly more expensive than the Amazon Kindle.

Last week, I was in the Microsoft CIO Summit and I saw a slew of Windows 8 desktops and notebooks from Lenovo, Acer and Asus. They are all sleek models and Windows 8 is indeed a compelling version. I also saw some new Windows 8 cell phones and I am looking forward to trying one out soon. I have played with Windows 8 since its preview and I think there are some really great reasons to own one, especially with a touch screen monitor.

It is going to be an exciting Christmas with lots of gadgets to choose from.

One of the things that I am really excited about is to have been accepted into Bill Gates Big History project as a tester. Gates spent a lot of time in his charity foundation, which has two very strong objectives: eliminate poverty and disease and improve education.

His projects like eliminating polio and malaria has been credited with saving millions of lives, especially in the developed world. It is really not only about giving money, but also how to spend it properly.

One of his recent projects is the Big History Project. This is an attempt to create free online courses for people worldwide and mixes traditional video lectures with animations, text and graphics. It is aimed to create content that brings the concepts to life and nurture both critical thinking and literary skills. Although in beta right now, it accepts students and teachers to participate in testing the course and providing feedback. They are still accepting applications right now and if you are a teacher who is passionate about teaching and increasing the quality of
availablecourseware, you might want to volunteer in http://www.bighistoryproject.com.
