Why investors, businesses should care about SWC
-A A +AThursday, October 25, 2012
INVESTORS and existing businesses should care about Startup Weekend Cebu (SWC) because we are now, more so than ever in history, at the intersection of business and technology.
Apple has long known this reality. In Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs, Edwin Land, founder of Polaroid, said “Those people who can stand at the intersection of the humanities and science, the liberal arts and technology, that intersection, are the people who can change the world.”
Apple went on to change the world, and they continue to do so. Apple is now worth close to $600 billion, making it one of the highest valued publicly traded companies in the world. An impressive feat for a company started by two young entrepreneurs in a garage.
Startup Weekend is about finding those two young entrepreneurs and helping them get turn their idea into a reality in a 52-hour event that will help launch their startup.
Startup Weekend Cebu will be filled with participants who will be the next Steve Jobs, Ev Williams, Biz Stone and Mark Zuckerberg and their ideas that have the potential to be the next Apple, Twitter, Square or Facebook.
Technology continues to change society and business. In fact, four out of the top 10 highest valued, publicly traded companies in the world are in the Technology industry, more than any other industry.
Businesses are constantly looking for new ideas and opportunities to create new products, improve existing models or discover new markets and technology continues to connect society and present these opportunities.
Investors and businessmen alike have the opportunity to be a part of the next big thing by partnering and participating in Startup Weekend Cebu.
Recently an early investor in Facebook sold a majority of his shares in the company, worth over $1 billion. His original investment was $500,000. His investment yielded a 2,072x return on investment. Yes, that is not a typo: 2,000x Return, not to mention that he still has five million shares. The next Apple or Facebook will be at Startup Weekend Cebu, you should be there as well.
SWC will be held on November 16-18, 2012 at Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. To register or or become a sponsor, visit www.cebu.startupweekend.org. Dave Overton
