CANDIDATES of the Czech Miss 2013 beauty pageant are set to arrive in Cebu City on Thursday, Jan. 31, as part of the pageant’s tour of the Philippines.

The 10 finalists, according to Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 Director Rowena Montecillo, will also visit other key cities in the Philippines, like Manila and Palawan.

Cebu is the pageant’s last stop, after Palawan, in their 11-day tour. The finalists and the pageant’s production staff will stay for five days in Cebu and will be housed in the Plantation Bay Resort and Spa.

Montecillo said she felt delighted that Cebu was chosen as one of the places the candidates will visit, as the island’s cultural tourism attractions and export industry will be highlighted.

“This is a rare chance for Cebu to be included in the background of an international pageant and while this is the first time for finalists to be here, we have to show the best of Cebu,” she said.

The cultural tour will begin at Paseo sa Kabilin (Cebu Heritage Walk) and will end in Casa Gorordo Museum.

In a phone interview yesterday, DOT 7 tourism operations assistant Riza Macaibay said the other activities the finalists will undergo are island-hopping and a tour of one of Cebu’s biggest dried mango production facilities and its “mango museum”. The DOT will also bring them to one of the export companies that manufactures fashion accessories, as well as allow them to try local guitars and lechon.

Macaibay said each activity will be documented by the pageant’s production staff.

The finalists arrived in the Philippines last Jan. 25.

The DOT has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with ESO Travel, the franchise holder of the Czech Miss 2013 beauty pageant.

The MOA was signed by Ambassador to the Czech Republic Evelyn Austria-Garcia and Tomas Cikan, general manager and Hynek Spinar, marketing director of ESO Travel at the Philippine Embassy Chancery in Prague last Jan. 10, according to a news report.

Under the agreement, the Philippines will be promoted as the “official destination” of the pageant through “Czech TV and print ads, Internet banners, and radio and outdoor campaigns relative to the beauty pageant.”

Special packages

Photo and video shoots of the finalists will be conducted in the different destinations in the Philippines and will be telecast on pageant night.

ESO Travel, on the other hand, will develop special travel packages to the Philippines within the period.

Montecillo believes Cebu will reap benefits, particularly in attracting more foreign tourists to visit Cebu and nearby provinces.

Aside from pushing for cultural tourism, the DOT 7 is also promoting Cebu as an adventure destination to attract young Filipino-Americans.

Montecillo said her office has met with a foreign organization to check Bohol and Cebu as potential areas to host an International Biking Competition.

“We are attracting the third and fourth generations of Fil-Ams who are really into all
sorts of adventure,” said.

Montecillo, who added she is pleased by how municipalities in Cebu have come up with their own adventure activities like trekking, biking and ziplines.
