Good times for branded watch outlets in PH, distributor says-A A +A

DESPITE the proliferation of big-brand imitation products in the country, a distributor of international brands in the Philippines said its business has not been seriously affected.
Newtrends International Corp. General Manager Avinash Uttamchandani said in an interview last Thursday, during the re-launching of the Meridian in Ayala Center Cebu, that the consumers who can afford to purchase popular brands will continue to patronize them even if there are fake brands entering the market, which are sold for much cheaper prices.
“I don’t think it (fake brand) affects; I think you have to consider the consumer. If they can afford the real one, they will buy the real one,” Uttamchandani said.
Newtrends International has been in the business of distribution and retail for international brand names, mostly timepieces and eyewear, for 16 years. It has 30 international brand names under its wing and a retail footprint of over 150 boutiques
and in-store counters.
Meridian is one of the retail stores of Newtrends located in Level 1, Paseo Wing of Ayala Center Cebu. It houses 12 foreign brands of watches, including Nixon, Ingersoll, Braun and Zepellin.
The store in Cebu is the first Meridian outlet in the Philippines established in 2011. The other branches are located in Davao and Metro Manila.
Uttamchandani pointed out that Cebu is one of the fastest selling areas for the Nixon watch, a US premium watch and accessories brand for “the youth lifestyle market”.
Nixon watches were introduced in the Asian market just three years ago, said Uttamchandani. He said the sales growth in Cebu can be attributed, in part, to the big
number of Korean tourists here.
He also said there is a very high demand for fashion watches, not only in the Philippines but also in other countries.
He said people were used to the traditional watches as recently as two or three years ago, but now they are into fashionable watches, like those with white or colorful straps.
Consumers who buy international watch brands usually did so every two to three years, said Uttamchandani, citing research that was done five years. Now, purchases are becoming more frequent.
He advised those who wish to own legitimate branded timepieces to purchase these in malls. Timepieces in Meridian range from P10,000 to P25,000.
