KIDAPAWAN CITY — The Department of Agriculture 12 is ready to assist rubber growers in North Cotabato and in the region provided they group together and form cooperatives, a ranking DA official said early this week.
Amalia Jayag-Datukan, DA-12 regional executive director, said her office will provide assistance for the establishment of rubber processing plant to push for the improvement of rubber industry in the region and in the country.
"We can provide assistance, even within the year, provided there are proposals from legitimate rubber growers' cooperative," Datukan said during a news conference on the upcoming 1st Mindanao Rubber Growers’ Congress to be held in Kidapawan City.
Datukan noted that the rubber industry in SOCCSKSARGEN region is the second top producing region in Mindanao and third nationwide.
Despite increasing production or rubber, the supply in the Philippines is still limited.
In 2011, Rubber contributed 80,470 million US dollars to Philippine exports.
With the growth of global economy, global consumption of rubber is also expected to increase, according to Datukan.
Considered a “sunrise industry,” Datukan said the rubber is slowly moving and something must be done about it, thus the Mindanao Rubber Growers’ Congress slated tentatively on November 6-7.
Datukan explained she was encouraged to push for a similar activity by the response of the stakeholders to the Mindanao Banana Congress held in General Santos City on last August.
She said, the event, which will revolve around the theme: “Empowering the Rubber Growers as Partners for Sustainable Economic Growth,” would focus on helping rubber growers learn new technologies that could boost rubber production not only in Soccsksargen Region but also in the entire Mindanao.
At the end of the congress, resolutions that would support the rubber industry are also expected to be passed for consideration by appropriate bodies.
Besides discussions on important rubber technologies, the Congress will also feature a field tour to rubber plantations in nearby Makilala town.
Data from the High Value Crops Development Program (HVCPD) of DA-12 indicated that in 2012 the country produced 88,943 metric tons of raw rubber.
Of these, 27,869 MT were produced in Soccsksargen Region which includes the provinces of North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani as well as the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan, and Cotabato. (PNA)
