MORE than 1,000 tour participants of a Korean-based educational company visited Cebu recently as part of their incentive tour.

Department Of Tourism (DOT) 7 Director Rowena Montecillo said they welcomed 1,019 members of the Woojin Think Big Incentive Tour Group to Cebu this month.

Woongjin Think Big is an educational company in Korea that works to create an “ideal educational culture” and publishes various kinds of educational books for infants to adults.

The first group with 478 members arrived last April 2 while the second group, composed of 541 members, arrived last April 6.

Montecillo said the DOT 7 is currently doing aggressive marketing promotions for Cebu as a Meetings, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition (Mice) destination.

She said more tour groups are expected to arrive in Cebu starting this year.

“2014 will be a busy year for Mice events in the country,” said Montecillo. “Not only will they boost tourism receipts but help speed up recovery of areas hit by super typhoon Yolanda.”

She said tourism stakeholders are bracing for big events to happen here such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) in 2015 and the Eucharistic Congress in 2016.

DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. on February announced 2015 as Visit Philippines Year (VPY 2015). He also confirmed the Philippine hosting of the Asean Tourism Forum in 2016.

“VPY 2015 will feature a calendar of events and activities that are an exciting mix of all the outstanding work of the Filipino people, as well as the unveiling of many more historic treasures, natural wonders, and unforgettable adventures. VPY 2015 is an invitation to all, especially our brothers and sisters in ASEAN, to come and partake of the enduring promise of more fun in the Philippines,” Jimenez said in a press statement.

Montecillo said Cebu is bidding to become the host destination for the VPY 2015.
