THE City Government of Naga, Cebu will comply with all the requirements set by the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) in undertaking reclamation projects.
Former City of Naga mayor Valdemar Chiong made the clarification after he was quoted in a news report as saying that the City doesn’t need the permission from PRA and the Cebu Provincial Government to reclaim foreshore areas.
Based on their city charter, they are allowed to reclaim foreshore areas.
“Yes, it is true that within our charter, Naga has the authority to reclaim foreshore lands. But we also recognize the PRA as a special body supervising any reclamation,” Chiong said.
Based on Republic Act 9491, or the City of Naga Charter, the City has authority to reclaim foreshore lands, including submerged lands within its jurisdiction in accordance with Republic Act 1899 or the Act Authorizing the Reclamation of Foreshore lands by Chartered Cities and Municipalities.
The Local Government Code also authorizes provinces and cities to fund and undertake reclamation projects to serve their residents. (JKV)
