PYROTECHNICS company Pyroworks International, Inc. will light up Cebu’s skies in a series of shows during the Sinulog celebration.

Owner Brian Benjamin Lim announced major pyrotechnic events to be held SM City Cebu, Ayala Center Cebu, Cebu City Sports Center grandstand and Crown Regency Hotel beginning Saturday, Jan. 15.

The Pyrofest III in SM City Cebu is a pyrotechnic show competition with eight teams coming from the different parts of the country. Lim said that aside from the competition, his company will also do a Pyromusical demonstration replicating the Sinulog beat. The show will take place at 8 p.m. on Jan.15.

On Jan.16, a series of fireworks shows will be done at the Cebu City Sports Center grandstand, Ayala Center Cebu and Crown Regency Hotel.

The Ayala show called Pyrospectacular is said to be one the country’s biggest fireworks shows. The 15-minute show will start at 9 p.m.

Lim said these pyrotechnic shows are one of the highlights of this year’s Sinulog celebration and total expenses may reach more than a million.

“This year’s shows are exciting as new firework designs will illuminate the sky,” Lim said.

Lim said there is a strong demand for professional fireworks shows as their market now includes festivals, birthdays, weddings and company launchings.

His company, he said, managed to grow by 100 percent, which he credited to their corporate accounts, hotels and resorts in Cebu.

“Consumers now opt to hire professionals to handle the fireworks shows for entertainment and safety purposes. Professionals know what to do,” he said.

Lim said most pyrotechnic companies invest in technology to guarantee excellent and safe shows.

Lim said the surge in demand for professional fireworks shows can also be attributed to the increasing consumer shift from the use of firecrackers to pyrotechnics because of safety issues.

According to the Department of Health, 95 percent of fireworks-related injuries in the country are caused by firecrackers.

Lim said that while the industry remains highly regulated by government because of safety issues, the level of awareness on its usage should be addressed.

“Devices, whether a firecracker or a pyrotechnic, can be dangerous if used the wrong way,” he said.

Lim said pyrotechnics manufacturers are also going green, making use of chemical compounds not harmful to the environment.

Pyroworks International Inc. is also the current Guinness World Record holder for “most fireworks rockets launched in 30 seconds.” Lim said they fired 125,801 rockets last year, breaking the record previously held by Dr. Roy Lowry of the United Kingdom.
