Cebu Pop songs

ON its 30th anniversary, the Cebu Popular Music Festival will feature winning songs in the past three decades and will do away with the competition this year.

Organized by the Cebu Arts Foundation Inc., which was recently named as one of the four Garbo sa Sugbo awardees during the 440th Provincial Charter Day celebration, the festival is aimed at helping preserve Cebuano culture in the field of original Cebuano songwriting.

This year’s concert will also feature artist Vina Morales, whose real name is Sharon Magdayao and who, at the age of eight, won the grand prize in the Cebu Pop Music Festival. She sang “Paglaum: Kabataan” in 1987. The song was composed by Fr. Fritz Malinao of Bogo. Vina rose as a star in Manila and is now one of the most sought-after international stage performers of our time.

The festival is held on a Friday before the Sinulog Grand Parade day.

It will be held at 7:30 tonight at the New Cebu Coliseum.

The organizers tried to locate the original interpreters of the winning pieces so they could perform again.

There will also be performances featuring selected pre-Pop songs or original Cebuano songs made popular prior to the Cebu Pop Music Festival.(PR)
