NOW that the first part of their mission is done, the Cebu Eastern College Dragons are gearing up for the tough road ahead.

From being the underdogs in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), the Dragons turned everything upside down as they finished the elimination round on top of the ranking with a 115-63 rout of the Don Bosco College Greywolves.

Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency

The Dragons finished with a 7-1 win-loss record. This is, however, not the end of the journey as the Dragons now need to follow through and make sure they make it to the finals.

The Dragons, with a twice-to-beat edge, will face the University of San Jose-Recoletos in the quarterfinals.

In a very physical game, the Dragons struck early and right off the bat posted a 24-8 lead in the opening frame. Things got heated in the third when the teams combined for 20 fouls, spiked by a Don Bosco player getting thrown out of the game for elbowing CEC’s Lerio Abecia.

All in all, the teams had two unsportsmanlike fouls each, several warning and technical fouls. A player was thrown out and one was bleeding from a cut on his eyebrow.

The Dragons, however made sure it will be a memorable last game as they scored the second-highest winning margin this season with 53, just two points behind University of Cebu’s 55-point win over DBC in another game.

Roy Villarias led the Dragons with 27 points, while Nike Montalvo and BJ Zosa added 24 and 21 points, respectively. Lyle Sumayang had 17 points.

DBC was eliminated after failing to win in eight games, a fate CEC suffered last year.

In the first game, the University of San Carlos Baby Warriors defeated the Cebu Institute of Technology Wildkittens, 78-61, to improve to a 3-4 record.
