THE MANAGEMENT

Taking a respite from the barrage of political entries I’ve been posting since this blog came about, allow me to announce with much joy in my heart that after five long years, my wife finally gave birth to a baby girl whom we now fondly call CANDICE ABIGAIL.

My daughter’s journey was not easy. During the first few months of my wife’s pregnancy, she almost suffered a miscarriage. The bleeding was so severe that we initially thought that the fetus would not make it. Surprisingly, the fetus survived up to the ninth month. However, barely three weeks before her “due date”, she noticed that the baby was no longer moving inside her womb. We immediately sought the doctor’s assistance until the baby’s biophysical profile count showed that the only way to save the baby’s life was through caesarean section.

What was the baby’s intra-uterine condition?

Part of the umbilical cord got coiled around her neck which had slowly tightened everytime she moved. Had it not been for the timely medical intervention, it would have reached a point where the baby would “suffocate” and eventually die.

But God is good. He did not allow our worst fears to happen.

Then finally, at exactly 4:21 p.m. on August 9, 2006, Candice Abigail was brought into this world — normal, healthy, bubbly and… ahem… looks quite like his father.

As if to confirm the old saying, the most important handshake of my life happened five days later when Candice Abigail’s tiny little hand touched my index finger.

Certainly a unique and profound feeling for a first timer like me.

When I took the bar exams in 2003, I never really thought I would be able to hurdle the most dreaded examination every aspiring law student has to take before being allowed to practice the legal profession. I mean, come to think of this: eight subjects spread throughout four grueling Sundays of September — political and international law, labor law, civil law, taxation, mercantile law, criminal law, remedial law and legal ethics. In addition to the voluminous legal provisions that one should learn by heart, he has to read the numerous Supreme Court decisions interpreting and applying the various laws. Yes, it is no joke. The study of law requires the dedication and determination to overcome the pressures that go along with it. Indeed, every barrister must see to it that he is physically, mentally, spiritually and psychologically prepared before venturing into the realm of the uncertain.

In my case, it was quite different. Coming as I was from an unknown law school in the Visayas, I had no illusions of passing the bar with flying colors. It is an admitted fact that bar topnotchers almost always come from the more popular law schools in the country — UP, Ateneo, San Beda and UST. All I wanted was to get that minimum grade of 75. And to me that was enough. Period.

Group to assist parents of children with ADHD

A SUPPORT group for parents of children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was recently form-ed in Cebu to help raise awareness of the condition, by giving help and support to parents and guardians.

ADHD is a behavioral condition in which children have difficulties paying attention and focusing on tasks.

The disorder begins in early childhood and can continue into adulthood.
