DepEd warns vs. classes on holidays

Sunday, September 5, 2010

ALTHOUGH Sept. 9 and 10 have been declared as non-working days, make-up classes may prevent students from enjoying the holidays.

That’s why Department of Education (DepEd) 7 Director Recaredo Borgonia said holding make-up classes on holidays is not encouraged.

Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency

“We are encouraging teachers to hold make-up classes on Saturdays and not on holidays.

Holidays are declared for a purpose. Holding classes on those days defeats that purpose,” he said in a phone interview.

Schools hold make-up classes to reach the number of school days required in a year.

Borgonia, however, said that so far, he has not received reports that primary or secondary schools are holding make-up classes on Thursday and Friday next week.

A school has to request the division superintendent to hold a make-up class, before pushing through with it.

Make-up classes on holidays are more common in the tertiary level.

Sept. 9 or Osmeña Day was declared a non-working holiday in Cebu City, Cebu Province and its component cities by Republic Act 6953, signed into law by the late former president Corazon Aquino.

President Benigno Aquino III declared Sept. 10, 2010 as a regular holiday throughout the country, in observance of Eid’l Fitr of the Feast of Ramadan, which the Muslim world celebrates for three days after the end of a month of fasting. (RSB)
