Determined Gorres starts therapy

EAGER to improve his bodily functions, Z Gorres immediately underwent his first session of physical therapy yesterday instead of taking a rest after being discharged from the Cebu Doctor’s Hospital from a throat surgery.

Gorres wasted no time and opted to have his first session of rehabilitation at the Perpetual Succour Hospital after being discharged only the other day.

“Z is very determined. He wanted to start his therapy instead of resting,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Gorres, 27, started his physical therapy with mild conditioning exercises. He was quite sluggish in his first session because he was confined in the hospital for almost one week.

Gorres had his throat operated on by physician Gary Rivera last Wednesday to open up his airway for him to breathe normally.

The former ALA star is scheduled to have rehabilitation six times a week in both physical and occupational therapy under physiatrist Dr. Ruel Dejaño.

The Perpetual Succour Hospital has doled out 30 sessions, free-of-charge, for Gorres in its rehabilitation center.

Two-division world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. and his wife Rachel are the most recent individuals to give aide to the fallen boxer.

The Donaires personally handed to Gorres’ wife Datches a total of P350,000 from their own pockets in their recent visit to Cebu City last week.

“Nonito has always said that he would help Z. His help will go a long way. Nonito is a very kind person. It’s good to know that there are people like Nonito who cares,” said Aldeguer.

Gorres suffered a subdural hematoma last Nov. 13 in his unanimous victory against Luis Melendez. Gorres collapsed on his way out of the ring and was rushed to the University Medical Center, where he underwent an emergency brain surgery.
