Ex-team captain says UC can beat UV

FORMER University of Cebu Webmasters team captain Kenneth Kern Sesante wants to show his fellow athletes that they can do more than just play ball.

Sesante, who is now the president of the UC Law Students Society (UCLASS), is organizing the “Match of the Titans” basketball competition between UC and Southwestern University Cobras on July 12 at the Cebu Coliseum.

It will serve as the pre-season tournament of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).

“I do miss the atmosphere playing college ball but I want to inspire the other athletes and show them that they have a choice other than sports. That although getting into the pro league has its rewards, there are a lot of other options for them as well,” said Sesante, who is now a third year law student.

He topped the Customs board exams and enjoys a full scholarship at UC’s law school.

Sesante still follows the updates of his former team and said this is the best year for UC to win the Cesafi championship and wrest the title from perennial champion University of the Visayas.

“Coach (Rhoel) Gomez said this season is the best chance for them to win the title because the players have the maturity level and we have recruits who will really help out the team,” Sesante said.

Gomez said UC’s center, June Mar Fajardo, is in his prime and is capable to steer the team to victory.

UC also tapped the services of 6’ Filipino-Canadians Keith Cayanog and France Bernil for the off-guard and point-guard posts, respectively.

“Although UC point guard Kelvin Juliane has the skills as a point guard, he is always out-muscled by the bigger point-guards of the other teams. These two rookies will be a big help to the team,” said Sesante, who played the same post during his years as a captain.

On the other hand, though SWU may have won a few titles in the past few months, athletic director Ryan Aznar is uncertain of their chances for this season.

“We have no idea how we will fare this year because we lost three key players,” said Aznar.

Eric Zanoria used up all his playing years, while Alfred Belande will not be playing because of academic problems. Clifford Maguate will not be seeing action this season because of injury.
