Telco responds in Visayas quake aftermath

FOLLOWING the recent earthquake in the Visayas, wireless services provider Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) set up libreng tawag centers in the hardest-hit areas in Negros Oriental.
Company personnel were immediately deployed to the Guihulngan National High School in Guihulngan City and at the City Hall to assist in the relief and rescue efforts of the local government.

Smart also set up a libreng tawag station at the evacuation center in the town of Tayasan to assist the affected residents.
“Our free call operations enable the people to contact relatives and loved ones to reassure them regarding their safety and to seek assistance,” said Mon Isberto, public affairs head for Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. and Smart.
Smart is working with the city government of Guihulngan to provide communications support to the city’s search and rescue operations.
