“The leadership awards seek to instill community awareness and leadership among the youth to prepare the new generation for their role as catalysts of change,” said Batuhan, who was the former undersecretary of the Department of Transportation and Communication and a staunch supporter of community advocacy activities in the district since 2004.
The contest is open to Grade 6 and 4th year students of public elementary and high schools in the city’s south district.
With the theme, “Akong Barangay, Distrito, Nasud,” participants must write about “Why I love my barangay and how I can help in its development and progress” or “Nganong mahal nako akong barangay ug unsa’y akong ikatabang alang sa iyang kalamboan ug kauswagan,” as entries can either be in English or Cebuano.
The entry must be original, authentic, unpublished online or offline, the sole property of the writer, and not previously submitted to any other contest.
There will be two levels of competition: the school level and district level.
Winners in the school level will advance to the district finals, where the screening committee will select 10 finalists each from the elementary and high school levels.
The top 3 winners in each category will be picked by a panel of judges from among the 10 finalists.
The winner in the high school division will get the Aristotle Batuhan community leadership trophy and P5,000 cash, while the first and second runners-up will receive plaques of appreciation and P3,000 and P2,000 cash, respectively.
Aside from the trophy, the elementary topnotcher will bring home P3,000 cash and the two runners-up will likewise get plaques of appreciation plus cash gifts of P2,000 and P1,000.
The schools where the top two awardees are enrolled will each receive a personal computer for their part.
In the school level, winners will get Aristotle Batuhan community leadership medals and mobile phone kit packages.
The top 10 finalists in each high school and elementary categories will receive a certificate of recognition and P1,000 worth of gift certificate.
Winners in the school level will be awarded during the commencement exercises of their respective schools, while the grand prize winners will be honored sometime in late April.
Entry forms are available at the offices of the schools’ principals and can also be downloaded from www.totolbatuhan.com.
Interested students may go to their principal’s office for further details on the contest.
