THE newly organized Portrait Artists Society of the Philippines Inc. will present to the public an art exhibition dubbed as “Portraits and Scenes” on Friday at 6 p.m. at the SM Northwing, SM City Cebu.
The group is a national organization based in Cebu whose members are interested in fine art portraiture. It is headed by internationally-acclaimed artist Romulo Galicano aided by Kimsoy Yap, Jun Impas, Dong Tallo, Carly Florido, Boy Briones, Adeste Deguilmo, Mar Vidal, Boy Kiamko, and Pepe Villadolid, among others.
The exhibit aims to improve the skills and knowledge of younger members through mentoring wherein senior artists would review, advise and guide junior members.
This is in line with the main objective of the society, which is to uplift the practice and aesthetics of traditional fine art portraiture.
Lectures and demonstrations by leading portrait artists will also be open to the public within the duration of the exhibit.
Last January, in response to the needs of Sendong typhoon victims, the Portrait Artists Society of the Philippines, in partnership with SM City Cebu, raised funds through an “exhibit for a cause” that earned P400,000, which was sent to the victims via ABS-CBN Foundation.
The society is also the umbrella organization of the Cebu Academy of Art. In consonance with the main objective of the society, the academy trains students to draw from casts and from real life.
Teachers also delve into the human anatomy to enrich the students’ knowledge and skills, as well as discuss key factors in the history of art.
The next exhibit set before the year ends is composite works of the members featuring drawings and sketches in the classical mode.
