AT LEAST 400 participants joined a run aimed at generating funds for urban poor communities and promoting community empowerment held recently in Cebu City.
The event was also held to raise support for upholding the different advocacies and projects in the urban poor communities of the Bag-ong Sugbo Foundation and the Cebu Coalition for Food Security and Urban Poor Alliance.
Himsog nga Barangay, Barangay IT (information technology) program and community enterprise development are the advocacies lined up for the funds generated from the activity.
Abeth Cabahug, executive director of the run, said these advocacies are intended to promote healthy and clean communities through feeding programs and urban gardening, and seeks to diminish the digital divide by distributing computers and connectivity gadgets to barangays and schools in Cebu.
The advocacies also plan to develop micro-businesses in the communities as part of empowering families in the localities.
Registration fees were priced at P150 and P350 depending on the distance that the participants, which were composed of students, people from the urban poor communities and other participants, chose to run.
The organizers of the event are the Bag-ong Sugbu Foundation and the Cebu Coalition for Food Security and supported by the Urban Poor Alliance of Cebu. Franel Mae Poliquit, UP Mass Comm student
