CEBU CITY -- Fans of Korean pop (K-pop) music in Cebu gathered at Robinsons Galleria last Saturday, January 6, to showcase their talents by performing their favorite K-pop songs.

Event organizer Cebu K-pop Icon Hunt (CKIH) held the activity, dubbed "Memento Mori," to remember all the K-pop groups, or even just members, who have contributed to where K-pop music is today.

"As an older K-poper, I noticed that the events today don't choose songs anymore that were from the past, and to sort of mix it up a bit, we wanted to appreciate the people who sort of made the foundation of K-pop," said CKIH head organizer Jacquilyn Chua.

Cover groups were given awards based on piso-per-vote system, which allowed the audience to cast their votes using coins dropped into the respective vote boxes of their favorite performers.

Out of the 35 performers, the cover groups with the most number of votes were Subzero and M98IV (Best Performance), Gen-X (Best Costume), Merge (Crowd Favorite) and Aff(x)tion (Peoples' Choice).

Subzero member Michael dela Torre and Luminescence member Shaina were named "Hidden Gems" during the Memento Mori, the 15th K-pop event since 2014.

During Saturday's event, giveaways were also given to spectators through pre-event raffles.

Official and unofficial K-pop merchandises were also sold during the event -- notebooks for P50, shirts (P150 to P250), stickers (P5 to P10), sticker sets (P25), posters (P35), keychains (P50 to P80), photo cards (P20), face masks (P150), coin purses and lanyards (P50), and official albums (P700 to P1,600).

The proceeds, meanwhile, from the piso-per-vote will be used in organizing the next event.

"We used to hold them (CKIH events) once every three or four months, but now, due to the increasing number of other organizations' events, we are doing at least one every year," Chua said.

The next major CKIH event may be held at end of the year, she said.

"We always try to think of different themes for our events. . . Just a sneak peek -- we are gonna have our 5th major event hopefully this year, and it's gonna be the best event that we've ever had. We're hoping we're not gonna make any mistakes for this event," Chua stressed.

Other organizations that hold K-pop cover group events are Cebu K-pop Convention, Cebu Cover Group Showdown, and Cebu K-pop Star. (Erica Dancel, USC AB Communications Intern/SunStar Philippines)
