NEW and alternative art spaces are attractive to the young set and emerging artists because primarily they welcome artworks that are contemporary in appeal.
Ongoing at the Canvas Bistro, Bar and Gallery, an Australian cuisine restaurant located at the Ayala Terraces, is a “double-feature” show of paintings by Ronyel Compra and Khriss Bajade.
Both artists were trained at University of the Philippines. This exhibition is their first tandem as new graduates and professional artists. They say that they hope the show will be a prequel to their coming series of exhibits in the city. (They have another exhibit in April.)

Though the two artists have different leanings, influences and views in art, they have managed to be partners in creative co-existence.
Compra, for most of his works, fuses both old and new techniques and appropriates indigenous materials to his paintings.
On the other hand, Bajade utilizes metal plates that are cut into abstracted organic forms. Both artists confessed that they are in a level of exploring and in experimental stage. Therefore, the small display of artworks at the restaurant’s walls are the products of their explorations.
It is amazing how they found the potentials in the materials and medium they use.
