Gello-ani: Sonsona will make weight

WEIGHT issues forced Marvin Sonsona to surrender his world title without throwing a single punch last year and now his manager is confident that is a thing of the past.

Sonsona, 19, lost his World Boxing Organization super flyweight crown after weighing-in two and a half pounds over the 115-pound limit. Luckily, the Filipino youngster kept his unbeaten record with a draw against Alejandro Hernandez.

Although Sonsona, a Gen. Santos native, had weight issues in the past, his promoter, Sammy Gello-ani, is confident that he will make the weight for his upcoming WBO super bantamweight title bout against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on Feb. 28 (RP time) in Puerto Rico.

“Marvin is doing fine here in Puerto Rico; his weight yesterday was 127 pounds but it’s not a problem,” Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

The title fight is at 122 pounds, two divisions higher than Sonsona’s last fight.

“We will have a pre weigh-in on Friday and he can easily get the required weight (of not more than five percent above the fighting weight). He is eating normally daily but we keep track of his weight. Today we will have the medical exams to comply with licensing requirements of Boxing Commission of Puerto Rico,” Gello-ani said.

Sonsona jumped from super flyweight to super bantamweight to vie for the WBO title vacated by Juan Manuel Lopez, who moved a division higher to win the WBO featherweight crown from Steven Luevano.

Sonsona, who is currently trained by Nonito Donaire Sr., is five pounds over the weight limit of the super bantamweight class.

He was recently criticized for being lazy and not coming to practice on schedule after becoming a world champion and hopes to change his tainted image by winning his second division world title.
