Gorres joins Arum’s Top Rank

Z GORRES’s long wait is just about to end.

A verbal agreement between ALA and Bob Arum means Gorres is the latest Pinoy to join Top Rank Promotions and the Cebuano could join three other Filipinos in the Pinoy Power 2 boxing event on Aug. 15 in Las Vegas.

ALA Promotions received an e-mail three days ago from Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler that said Gorres could fight in the undercard of Pinoy Power 2– which will be headlined by Filipino superstar Nonito Donaire Jr.’s bout against Rafael Concepcion for the interim World Boxing Association super flyweight crown.

“Z’s already with Top Rank. Usually Top Rank gives you fights under their banner before signing you,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu.

“We’re negotiating on putting Z Gorres on the Pinoy Power 2.

We’re just waiting for the go signal from Top Rank.”

Final decision

Gorres, who has only fought twice in 12 months, was originally scheduled to fight in the undercard of Top Rank and Solar Sports’s Aug. 29 card at the Araneta Coliseum featuring International Boxing Federation light flyweight king Brian Viloria and veteran ex-world champion Gerry Peñalosa.

If Gorres joins the Pinoy Power 2 undercard then highly-rated ALA fighter Milan Melindo could step in for him in the undercard of the Aug. 29 boxing event.

“There is a chance that Milan will be included in the Aug. 29 card. We’re just waiting for the final decision of Pinoy Power,” said Aldegeur.

Another ALA fighter that the promoters are considering in the undercard for Aug. 29 is 17-year-old Jason Pagara.

Performance

However, that all depends on his performance in his fight with Indonesian warrior Simson Butar-Butar on July 25 in Bohol.

At 27, Gorres is eyeing top-caliber fights and another crack at a world title.

He is targeting some of the biggest names in the smaller weight categories, including Armenian world champion Vic Darchinyan, World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel, International Boxing Federation bantamweight titlist Joseph Agbeko and veteran former world titleholder Jorge Arce.

“Z’s goal is to fight big -name opponents in big fights. We are hoping for a crack at a world championship in the next few years. Z wants to fight either Darchinyan or Montiel in a rematch. He also is looking at a fight with Agbeko and Arce, who is his dream match,” said Aldeguer.
