THE escape of an inmate last Tuesday prompted a revamp at the Cebu City Jail.
Supt. Waldmer Villanueva was removed as warden effective last Thursday. Supt. Felixberto Jagorin took over the post. He served the Bohol District Jail before his designation at the Cebu City jail.
The turnover of command took place at 1:30 p.m. last Thursday in the regional office of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) 7.
Villanueva will stay at the regional headquarters, pending his new assignment.
The revamp took effect two days after Reynard L. Marturillas, 35, an inmate who was waiting for his transfer to the National Bilibid Prison, escaped.
Insp. Anacleto Dusaran, jail chief custodian, was also relieved and transferred to the Mandaue City Jail.
Senior Insp. Dennis Aliño and Senior Insp. Julito Tarona Jr. were designated to help Jagorin in supervising the Cebu City Jail.
Aliño sits as deputy warden for administration, while Tarona is the deputy warden for operations.
Marturillas, who had been convicted in a drug-related case and for concealing a deadly weapon, was believed to have escaped by sneaking inside the garbage truck that dropped by the city jail last Tuesday afternoon.
A team of jail personnel led by Insp. Richard Laure is hunting down Marturillas. The manhunt reached as far as Guihulngan, Negros Oriental, the escapee’s last known provincial address.
Meanwhile, a laborer who used to work as a barangay tanod of Ermita and who allegedly served time in the city jail, was gunned down along M.C. Briones St. in Barangay Sto. Niño, Cebu City last Friday midnight.
Joseph Padayon, 28, died of gunshot wounds in the head and face.
Three men attacked Padayon while he was pushing a cart loaded with vegetables.
One empty shell from a .45 pistol and one slug were recovered at the crime scene. The victim’s body was taken to San Fernando Funeral Homes.
SPO4 Alex Dacua of the Homicide Section told Sun.Star Cebu they are verifying reports Padayon served a prison term at the Cebu City Jail.
A day before the attack, Dacua said, Padayon reportedly got into a fight with a resident in the nearby Sitio Bato in Barangay Ermita.
The person Padayon fought with may be invited by the police as part of the investigation.
