Artists respond to Sendong
Monday, January 30, 2012
ARTISTS also have a responsibility to the community.
This is the belief of Romulo Galicano who urged the members of the Portrait Artists Society of the Philippines (PASP) to donate a painting for an art exhibit with proceeds going entirely to the victims of Typhoon Sendong. So there it is, at the second floor of the SM Northwing, an exhibit that drew a quick response from the artists, including non-PASP members. The exhibit ends on Feb. 3.

A total of 56 artists responded to the plea of Galicano, who had asked the artists to contribute really good paintings to the cause. The highest priced paintings sold even before the exhibit opened: Galicano’s “Fisherman’s Village” sold for P145,000, Ed Lantin’s ”Low Tide, Cordova”, for P60,000 and SYM’s (Sofronio Mendoza) “Flower Composition,” also for P60,000. Lantin and SYM, both Cebuanos, are Canada-based.
Also sold were PASP president Jun Impas’ “The Crossing”, Tito Cuevas’ “KisapMata”, Adeste Guidelmo’s “Winnowing Rice” and Ber Hermoso’s “Simala Horizon.”
Most of the works are in oil, like those of Ronnie Abayan, Gabby Abellana, Khriss Bahade, Crispin Bovier, Boy Briones, Boboy Cañete, Cesar Castillo, Felix Catarata, Ramon de Dios, John Dinglasa, Audie Estrellado, Carly Florido, Bong Francisco, Luther Galicano, Bobby Gonzales, Benjie Goyha, Elroy Managbanag, Melver Mercado, Jess Najarro, Clint Normandia, Gigi Ocampo, Cocoy Paano, Ronilo Pautan, Celso Pepito, Jose Mari Picornell, Dong Tallo, Lito Torremucha, Pepe Viladolid, Jobril Villaver, PempeYbañez, Orley Ypon and Sonia Yrastorza. Estrellado is from Siquijor, Paano from Cagayan de Oro and Ypon is Manila-based.
Choosing to donate works in acrylic are Darby Alcoseba, Adeste Deguilmo, Boy Kiamko, Eli Mañongas, Jess Rona and AntonioVidal. Watercolor works are from Karby Beloy, Leo Bomediano, Reynan Dingal, Nomar Miano, Maxcel Migallos, and Kimsoy Yap. Works in pastel are from Dondon Bayawa, Drego Cavalida, and Mar Vidal. A mixed media work “Puso” is from Golda King while Billy Pomida, from Siquijor, chose tuba on paper for his “Flower Vendor.”
Almost all of the paintings are realistic in style, featuring landscapes, seascapes, flowers, farm scenes and family scenes, except for Kiamko’s and Cuevas’ works. Kiamko donated two of his works in his trademark cubism style. Villaver also had two donations.
The proceeds of the exhibit, assured Romulo Galicano and Jun Impas, will all go to the victims of Typhoon Sendong who still have a long way to go before life can be normal again. The exhibit itself is a beautiful kaleidoscope of the artistry and craft of local artists, and is, in effect, a showcase of their concern to their fellowmen. If you share the same concern, do buy a painting and know that you not only have a beautiful painting but that you also have a beautiful heart.
