Espina: USJ-R theater: 48 years of Words and Music
In my diary
Monday, February 13, 2012
THE then Colegio de San Jose-Recoletos (CSJ-R, 1964-1984), now University of San Jose-Recoletos Dramatics and Cultural Ensemble (USJ-R DCE, 1984-2000) with the Amparito Lhuillier Scholars (1995-2012) and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) celebrate 48 Years of Words and Music: Best of Broadway.
They will present all musicales and cultural shows I directed since my first year at USJ-R. In 1964, I established the Little Theater, with then high school principal, the late Aniano Abellana, and directed Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Alan Rabaya and Ed Abores were two of the dwarfs) in 1964; then Student Prince in 1965; the first West Side Story in 1967 (when late Fr. Victor Lluch was head ofstudent affairs, who, later, directed plays with Nort Labata from 1969-1975, until the former was re-assigned in Manila). In 1976, then president Fr.Blas Montenegro re-organized the group under the College of Arts and Sciences, and, thereafter, I directed more Broadway musicales and cultural shows in international festivals in the US (Salinas; San Jose; Daly; Utah), Russia, Vegas, Singapore, Korea, Beijing, among others, with advisers Alita Laborte, Usaffe Requieron and Marietta Degamo. From 1995-2012, the group, now referred to as USJ-R DCE-ALLEF (Lhuillier scholars/alumni) continued to pursue theatrical and cultural performances as part of learning and cross-cultural experiences. The CSJ-R Dramatics Guild alumni which Fr. Lluch founded and the USJ-R DCE-ALLEF under my tutelage, remain intact promoting USJ-R’S vision of Quality Christian Community Oriented education.
