AFTER the canonization of Beato Pedro Calungsod on Oct. 21, at the Vatican, the action shifts to our beloved province because our second Filipino saint is proudly a Cebuano.

The thanksgiving celebration here is set for Nov. 30 but as early as last month, Cebuanos have joined hands to help raise funds for the expected expenses during the canonization rites and during the National Thanksgiving Mass in our Queen City.

The first joint effort between church officials and the private sector was a cocktail affair at Radisson Blu Hotel where a limited edition commemorative piece of Blessed Pedro Calungsod designed by internationally-acclaimed Cebuano artist Kenneth Cobonpue, was unveiled. A donation of P25,000 entitles donors to own a commemorative piece as well as get a chance to win two BMW cars and a KIA Sorrento. Only 1,200 certificates of donation were issued. His Eminence Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal along with Msgr.
Roberto Alesna and Msgr. Achilles Dakay graced the occasion. The government officials present were Gov. Gwen Garcia and Mayor Mike Rama.

Ongoing at Paseo Solana of Ayala Center is a photo exhibit showing the beauty of nature in Amara, Ayala Land Premier’s lighthouse community in Liloan. It is dubbed “Elements/Amara.”

The beautiful photos were captured by the lenses of Raul Arambulo, Estela Ocampo Fernandez and Raymund Fernandez. Doing the honors of cutting the ceremonial ribbon were Cebu Holdings Inc. president Francis Monera, Cebu Property Ventures president Antonio Chiu and director/lawyer Anastacio Muntuerto Jr.

The latest addition to the restaurant chain of Dr. Ricardo and Julita Urbina is the U.Kitchen where their original resto (Cafe Laguna) used to be.

This time around, though, the once unpretentious place has been transformed to an imposing three-storey edifice called the Laguna Culinary Center Bldg.

The U Kitchen, a glass-enclosed affair done along clean lines (a handiwork of design master Albert Garbanzos), is on the first floor. Lording it over the kitchen is Chef Raki Urbina who continues to come up with innovations to the well-loved standard recipes originated by his Mom Lita.

A new landmark in the bustling town of Consolacion is SM City Consolacion in barangay Lamac. It is the second SM City in Cebu and the first outside the city proper. Opening day was a festive affair with Hans Sy on the frontline. But of course SM City vice president Marissa Fernan was not far behind.
