THE story of the Metro chain of department stores and supermarkets began in 1981 when the late Victor Gaisano, youngest of the Gaisano brothers of the original White Gold Department Store, incorporated Vicsal Development Corp. with the help of his loving wife Sally and their four children—Margaret, Jack, Edward and Frank. Its first department store, named Metro Gaisano (MG), opened in 1982 in the heart of downtown Cebu. The Metro group hasn’t looked back since then and now counts 18 retail outlets in different parts of the country, with the latest one opening last month in Alabang.

I was part of the Cebu media group invited by Margaret Gaisano Ang to join the private celebration marking the opening of the new Metro Department Store & Metro Supermarket at the Alabang Town Center. It was a proud day for us Cebuanos because Metro is a home-grown brand and it has so progressed that it is now the new anchor store of still another Ayala shopping mall in Metro Manila. Metro is the anchor store in Market, Market.
There are three floors (44,000 sq.m.) offering a variety of merchandise—from scents and make-up to jewelry and luggage, from clothes and shoes to furniture and house decor, from toys and accessories to houshold items and clothing material, etc.
On the other hand, the spacious basement houses the wine celler, coffee shop and the supermarket with its array of fresh, canned, local and imported goodies. The entire set-up of the new Metro Department Store & Metro Supermarket in Alabang is pleasant
and classy!
Kudos to the Metro Gaisano siblings. More power!
