Pearl essence-A A +A
Thursday, November 22, 2012
THE genesis of a precious sea jewel—yes, that dear pearl—is a fine metaphor in which enduring pain is rewarded with a treasure. Why, a pearl is shaped after a mollusk’s effort to protect itself from external stress, a foreign substance in its shell.
Everyone can’t help but admire the gem’s polished beauty, perhaps knowing that it earned beauty the hard way, and that makes it even more worthy to be cherished.
But this is not a biology discussion. Because Sun.Star Cebu is celebrating its 30th anniversary on Nov. 25, Live! makes a fashion fare for the taking. And how does talking about pearls figure in the picture?
It is said that anniversaries are named to signify traditionally apt gifts to be exchanged among celebrators. Many are familiar with the 25th (silver) and 50th (golden) anniversaries but there is in fact the 30th anniversary (pearl). Need we say more?
And so, intrepid designer Albert Arriba was only too willing to share his creations to help realize a charming show entitled “Pearl Essence.” It is not about the translucent substance used in making artificial pearls, but the inspiration the substance has given to the fashion desinger.
Pearl Essence is an exciting display of outfits that by and large depict glorious years in, well, curious approaches. Each stylish piece tackles the permanent elements of well-merited episodes that come to a company. To introduce each piece, we used words like “stroke” and “brush” to represent movements made by craftsmen.
The first stroke is made through a single shoulder “newspaper dress.” No kidding here.
It is literally made of tiny newspaper cutouts, lined from the waist down to the hem.
Beefing up the style are fine embroidery, beads, Swarovski crystals and pearls resting on supple Japan silk chiffon in white.
A wise brush is done through a Grecian-looking frock; the easy features to this graceful design are the twisting patterns of cloth forming smart, knotty works. To give the whole attire an animated feel, sparkling bead and pearl embellishments are put to service over crepe chiffon.
Another sweep is a strapless “leafy dress” in yellow. Indeed, the main attention-getters are the tiny leaf cutouts well spread from the neck until they diminish from the hip down to the slight trail. It comes with a leather belt as accessory, which is sprinkled with beads, chains and rhinestones, which pose a sparkly competition for notice!
The last movement, and quite the most edgy, is done through a lacy, white ensemble. It also flaunts of tiny leafy cutouts paired with beads and pearls, but it is the sheer character that triumphantly steals the limelight. To complete the elegant feel is the lovely, lingering trail.
Not a single item in this set was pulled off overnight—the same way that Sun.Star, layer by layer like the pearl, took time to build its shining reputation. Thus, every piece contributes to the goal of portraying the essence of pearl years, that is to say pride following a period of hard work.
