Proudly Cebuano musical about friends, social media-A A +A

IT USED to be paper—journal pages of leather-bound notebooks that held our most sacred thoughts and sentiments. It never occurred to us to share them with the rest of the world. (Well, perhaps posthumously.)
But all that is history. Today, we might write down the same things—this time electronically. Same old mix, but on a different medium. Social media are our new journal pages. Twitter. Tumblr. And—for the moment, at least—the king of the hill: Facebook.
This (among many others) is the premise of a new musical hitting Cebu soon—You’ve Been Facebooked! (or Facebooked). Besides social media awareness, the play brings to the surface matters like cyberbullying, online romances and being a (willing or unwilling) voyeur of, well, everybody else’s lives. And it does so with an lineup of all-original songs composed by Jude Gitamondoc, a nationally acclaimed songwriter who has written for the likes of Gary V., Raki Vega and Nina, and recently won the TFC Choice Award for his entry in the recent Himig Handog P-pop Love Songs competition. Gitamondoc is
also the scriptwriter and musical director of the play. The cast is proudly Cebuano.
Edison “Jingle” Saynes, is the creative director; Vincent Paul Gaton, choreographer/dance director; Pami Therese Estalilla, wardrobe; and Antoinette Gorgonio, vocal coach. The group came together to create original material for theatre, because as much as they were Broadway fans and never minded a bit of borrowing, they also felt that the local theatre scene could do with a lot more of its own. With that, Offbeats Concepts Production House (nicknamed The Offbeats) was born.
Facebooked! premiers at Lakwatsa Resto Lounge (Hernan Cortes St., Mandaue City) with matinee and gala shows (4 p.m. and 7 p.m.) on March 8 and 9. For details about tickets and reservations, check out the show’s Facebook page at facebook.com/fedthemusical or call Mitch at 09222474112. (PR)
