Telcos join relief efforts in Zambo-A A +A

SMART Communications Inc. (Smart) and Digitel Mobile Philippines Inc. (DMPI) employees in Zamboanga City, with volunteers from a group called Shelter, have been distributing food and clean water to evacuees at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Stadium.
At present, the grandstand of the stadium is home to more than 44,000 Zamboangueños who were temporarily evacuated due to the armed conflict, which has been going on for more than a week.
Smart and Shelter also distributed almost 100 recycled mats made from used Smart and Sun tarpauline billboards at the boulevard where Badjao families evacuated.
Smart and Sun Libreng Tawag services for free calls and texts are also ongoing at the Western Mindanao State University Gym.
Data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development showed that 62,329 people were displaced by the ongoing standoff as of Sept. 15.
