Espina: September affairs-A A +A
Monday, September 23, 2013
REMEMBER movies and songs like September Affair, September Song, and I’ll See You In September when summer is gone? Nostalgic! I have always had a soft heart for September because it ushers in the Yuletide season and is the birthday (Sept. 24) of my dearest brother Larrie (he spearheaded the Lady Rustan and Silvano collections). In Cebu, the motif and colors of events in September create a jolly ambiance.
In the academe, the MMEXM Norkis group of masteral students conducted a debate on the legalization of same sex marriage (must have been affected by the GMA7 soap My Husband’s Lover) where the affirmative won. The other batch at University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) tackled the issue of Bragging Epidemic in social networking. The Speechcom and Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) had an interactive seminar Think! Speak! Act Like a Pro!
In Laray, Talisay, at the St. Consolation Parish, Fr. Anthony Morillo spent his birthday with relatives, selected USJ-R, Cebu School Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) colleagues and parishioners. It was there I met former co-teacher Clarita Dacua, now a successful owner of CVD College (for Clarita V. Dacua).
Over at the 40th day mass for the late Britta Quisumbing, my friend, Delia Jurado, introduced me to two beauties of yesteryears, who still looked gorgeous, Letty Santos nee Villareal, who was then 1950 Ms. Cebu Carnival Queen, and 1952 Ms. Visayas, Pearl of the Orient, during the reigns of Cristina Galang as Ms. Philippines and Armi Kuusela as Ms. Universe, and Meding Romero (mother of actress Chanda Romero).
CCCI is preparing for many events for the commemoration of its Centenniial +10 in November. Awards chair Gerry Sta. Ana is tirelessly researching on the pioneers, pillars, pacesetters, propellers and partners of the chamber, individuals and institutions, past presidents, among others, across the decades of its growing development and accomplishments. Main source is the CCCI history penned by Dr. Efren Valiente. The CCCI Hymn is now available to schools/groups who would like to join the Centennial Hymn contest, from 1-6 p.m., Nov. 9, at Ayala Activity Center, co-sponsored by Ayala, Speechcom and 888 Forum (Bobby Joseph).
In My Diary Communication Kit: These words are pronounced with stress on the first syllable: memorable, ceremony, delicacy, personally, orator, omnibus and accuracy. If it’s a noun, the word “concert” is stressed on the first syllable, like contract, digest, conduct or permit. The stress shifts to the second syllable in its verb form.
Example: I attended the band con’cert (noun). Let us concert’ our efforts for a common cause.
