Layers of interest-A A +A

MOST men aren’t too choosy when it comes to casual layers. Most of the time, a baggy hoodie or parka will do. It’s comfy, and it keeps him warm. But men definitely want a tailored and sophisticated look for more formal occasions or when they need to impress. When it’s time to put on something more special, there are new interpretations on layering pieces for menswear by two Cebuano designers.
A different take on the denim jacket by Jesse Lastimosa is done in a blazer style with a unique collar. This is nothing like the stonewashed denim jacket that is best suited for a very casual or rugged day. The dark denim wash of this piece with a slight sheen is very urban, and would look great at a trendy party or dressy night out. The jacket looks especially city-slick with dark neutral pants and lace-up boots.
Jessie also presents a long-sleeved shirt that is cool to the eye with its blue-green hue. The designer intended for this to be cool against the skin as well: “Since this a ready to wear garment, the cotton fabric I used was intended to be comfortable all day long,” Jessie says. The shirt is a military-inspired piece with loops on the shoulders, and dark piping on two front pockets and the wrists.
Rennie Braza’s floral jacket was inspired by the softness that men do not often portray. The jacket is crafted from wool and printed material to maintain a more tailored shape. It seams together gold-hued fabric with the floral for a combination of solid and print, with the designer opting for more muted tones instead of bright or graphic florals.
Cut in a modern tuxedo style, this jacket can transition from casual to formal events.
It is paired with a lavender shirt that picks up from the floral print. Tan trousers are a great neutral to balance out pastel colors on top. Putting together an ensemble around something printed is made easier with other clothes in solids and neutrals.
As these smart ensembles show, there are layering options for menswear that are much more sleek, and much more flattering on the male physique than that worn-out hoodie or sweater.
