Vegan’s Guild-A A +A
Friday, September 27, 2013
IF YOU have ever dropped by Banilad Town Centre’s weekend food market, chances are you have spotted Vegan’s Guild, a booth manned by the charming Turkish ex-pat, Firas Baassiri, who will invite you to have a bite of his culinary creation, the vegan burger.
The burger is smaller compared to its counterparts in fast food chains. But since it is made using lentils, the burger is packed with nutrients—making it a healthy, satiating treat that can last one throughout the day. Aside from the burger, which is the mainstay, Firas also serves salad and other vegan dishes in the booth
Firas has been a vegan since he was six years old and has been preparing his own meals for the last 24 years. The trick in being a vegan, he said, is to simply familiarize how to calculate food’s nutritional content. “People think that by cutting down carbohydrates and fat, they will lose weight but not really. It’s more important to know what’s inside what they’re eating,” Firas said. In the photo, he is preparing tofu steak with arugula and grilled eggplants salad as appetizer, vegan burger as main course, and raw cheesecake as dessert.
