DOST honors best inventors

THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) formally announced the winners of the 2013 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits last Sept. 21 in the Ayala Center Cebu.

Working on the theme “Inventions and innovations for a smarter Philippines”, the winners emerged as the best among 30 entries from all over the Visayas.

The Technology Application and Promotion and Institute (TAPI) and the Visayas Inventors Association (VIA) co-presented the awards.

In the high school category, Kent B. Ocampo, Steffy Jell C. Largo and Caitlin Faye M. Novales of the Minglanilla National Science High School received P20,000 for the first prize.

Their entry, “Postprandial Anti-Hyperglycemic Effect of an Alkaloid from Tinospora rumphii”, also qualified for the National Invention Contest.

College, too

First runner-up honors and a prize of P10,000 was awarded to “Starch-Based Bioplastic Film Incorporated with ZnO Nanorods Against Microbial Attack” by Kristine Mae Amandoron, Emily Jane Merin and Cyd Kristoff Redelosa of the Philippine Science High School.

Valerie Tesing, Maria Fatima Tan and Michael Angelo Obeso of the Minglanilla National Science High School won second runner-up and P5,000 for their research project, “A Model of High-Pressure Atomizer for Increased Evaporation Rate.”

In the college category, first prize and P20,000 went to Calvin Alfred Caduhada, Bea Alfeche, Cristine Pontiniela, Cassandra Giselle Gaas, Ellah Jane Abay-abay, Acetylene Bolotaolo and Charisse Chua of the Cebu Institute of Technology University.

They will compete in the National Invention Contest with their entry, “Extraction and Purification of Bromelain from Pineapple Peelings Using PEG-Phosphate Aqueous Two-Phase System.”

A team from Silliman University won first runner-up and a cash prize of P10,000 for their project, “Antibacterial Activity of Epidermal Mucus from Scarus Species.” The team behind this was composed of Dinah Belle Abong, Esther Ann Nacita, Marc Daniel Nisperos, Kim Sarong,Daniel Sarte, Quennie Fritzie Toralde and Pretty Villar.

Second runner-up honors and a prize of P5,000 went to Joseph Joel Guardiario, Chong Min Park, Junver Libor and Joshua Nepomuceno of the University of San Carlos, for their “Power Hand-drill Kart.”

In the Likha or Creative Research Category, the judges picked “Sustainable and Resilient Emerging/ Floating Structure” by Cris Cyril Abbu and Myla Gador of Kora Design and Architects. They received P20,000 and qualified for the national contest.

Next round in 2015

First runner-up was Noro S. Camomot, who won P10,000 for his “Rice D51 Circulating Rice Dryer with Gravity Inlet and Outlet Distribution and Multi-fuel System.”

The second runner-up prize of P5,000 went to Cris Cyril Abbu and Myla Gador of Kora Design and Architects, for their “Sustainable and Resilient Collapsible-Knockdown Structure.”

In the Invention Category, the first prize of P25,000 went to Pedro H. Delantar of Nature’s Legacy for his “Molded Coarse Particle Product with Cast Paper-Based Reinforcement.” He will compete in the National Invention Contest.
