CEBU did it again. When tragic gloom occurs, the best elements of the Cebuano shine!
Decades ago, during the incumbency of then Gov. Lito Osmeña, Cebuanos raised funds for the typhoon victims of Ormoc. Then there were also typhoons Ruping and Unyong, among so many others.
The latest havoc brought about by the strongest earthquake Cebu ever felt aroused once again the Cebuano’s passion to help the victims from Cebu and Bohol. No less than business icon Jay Aldeguer followed by the Facebook notes of Wilson Ng, raised the wake-up call as the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) led by president Lito Maderazo, vice president Antonio Chiu convened civic groups like Zonta 1 (led by Lucille Colina, Nellie Chiu and Tess Chan), Rotary Clubs, Cebu Business Club (led by Dondie Joseph), Mandaue Chamber, schools, among others, at the Ayala Activity Center to drum up solicitations.
It was the time to show that our performing artists have the heart to share their talents for a cause. The stage rocked with the performances of Sakdap, Knapsack, 10-G, Mandaue Children and Youth Chorus; Sistemang Pilipino, University of Cebu (UC) choir, University of Southern Philippines, Cebu-Philharmonic Orchestra; Sinulog Idols, emcees Jude Bacalso and Billy Sienes; soloists like former Allef scholars Rachel Puray, Johar Lapasaran, Gerard Cabras and the 10G, ABS-CBN talents led by Adrian Diongzon, director Rudy Aviles and so many others. And no earthquake tremor could stop them! That’s the Cebuano spirit!
Aside from the concert, other centers in the Province and City of Cebu (Piso-Piso); GMA7, ABS-CBN, Zonta 1, University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), Speechcom, University of the Visayas, American Chamber (Amcham) and groups from Lapu-Lapu City and Mandaue City have been collecting “in-kind” donations.
These natural calamities are eye-openers which prick our conscience and make us protect our Mother Earth and appreciate God’s loving Providence.
Zonta Month launch
The Zonta Clubs 1 and 2 will launch November as Zonta Month today, Oct. 29 at the Country Club. The Province and City of Cebu passed the resolutions acknowledging Zonta’s decades of service and advocacies.
SP comm. kit
Programs are usually long and dragging because speakers or performers do not follow the format and time frame. The welcome remarks must be cordial and brief. Focus on the event, objectives and activities. Begin and end with a hearty greeting! Do not steal the thunder from the keynote or main speaker.
