The comfort of ice cream-A A +A
Friday, November 1, 2013
WITH recent events caused by force majeure, everyone has been looking for some way to soothe their nerves.
If photos on social media are any indication, many have turned to the comfort of dessert, enjoyed in the safety of their homes and with loved ones. Of all the sweets posted on Facebook and Instagram, ice cream was probably the most popular. This certain variety is quickly becoming very recognizable, packaged with a gold lid and a printed silhouette of a farm girl leading a cow: Blue Bell ice cream.
From small-town Brenham, Texas, America’s third best-selling branded ice cream has finally made it to Cebu. For over 100 years, Blue Bell Creameries has prided itself in using the best and freshest milk, cream and eggs to make its old-fashioned homemade-style ice cream, named for the Texan wildflower. Flavors include Strawberry, Strawberries and Homemade Vanilla, Cookies ‘n Cream, Dutch Chocolate, Rocky Road, Banana Pudding, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Since 1969, plain and simple Homemade Vanilla has been the most popular flavor, and tastes like “the hand-cranked ice cream folks used to make on the porch during long summer evenings.”
Aside from all-time favorites, there are more unique flavors: Banana Split doesn’t have only bananas, but also diced maraschino cherries, roasted almonds, and strawberry and chocolate sundae sauces, all mixed in vanilla ice cream. Krazy Kookie Dough has cake batter ice cream with colorful sugar cookie dough pieces. Moo-llennium Crunch has dark chocolate chunks, creamy caramel chunks, pecan halves, chopped almonds and walnut pieces in classic vanilla ice cream.
Vanilla ice cream is loaded with crunchy chocolate peanut butter candy to make Butter Crunch. Red Velvet Cake has cake pieces and a cream cheese icing swirl. Rocky Mountain Road was created to honor Colorado’s Rocky Mountain scenery, with dark chocolate ice cream, dark chocolate-coated peanuts, milk chocolate-coated pecans, white chocolate-coated almonds, roasted walnuts, and marshmallow sauce.
Blue Bell also has individually-wrapped single-serve snacks like the Chocolate Chip Country Cookie, with two chocolate chip cookies sandwiching vanilla ice cream. There are two varieties of the Country Cone: Vanilla has a wafer cone, and is topped with a chocolate coating and peanuts; Cookies ‘n Cream has a chocolate wafer cone and a chocolate flavored coating.
All 14 creamy, comforting flavors are available to Cebuanos in pints and half pints.
Blue Bell ice cream is distributed by Visfood Corporation and is available at Rustan’s Supermarket Ayala, One Pavilion Mall Banawa, Gaisano Country Mall, David’s Kitchen, Shangri-la’s Mactan Resort and Spa, BE Resorts, Mooon Cafe Ayala and IT Park, the Blue Bell PH office at Room 205 of TPE Building in Banilad during office hours, and at the BTC Market on Sundays.
