A CAREFULLY selected Christmas present becomes extra special when it comes in a lovingly wrapped package. For gifts that stand out at any Christmas party or under any Christmas tree, the best way to go about it is do-it-yourself gift wrap.

Photographer, graphic designer and all-around creative person Jacklyn Uy came up with the pretty gift wrapping ideas and the photography on this page. These easy ideas won’t take too much time, and don’t require fancy materials. Most can be found at home, or at the bookstore. Children can do these under adult supervision so that the family can bond while wrapping Christmas presents.

Before beginning any of these projects, measure the paper first to be sure that it completely covers the present. Cutting off excess paper will be easier than having to start over from wrapping paper that is too small. For all of these, keep scissors and tape handy.

These creative ideas can definitely be used anytime of the year, for any occasion.

Enjoy adding your own spin to these ideas and see how the recipient’s face lights up once they receive the beautifully wrapped present.

Patterns and polka dots

You will need:

• Manila Kraft paper or any plain, somewhat thick paper

• Stamps and ink pad

• Pencil and acrylic paint

How to:

1. Create any pattern on plain paper using stamps.

2. To do cute and quirky polka dots, dip the bottom of an old pencil into acrylic paint, then make the pattern on paper. Jacklyn recommends acrylic paint instead of poster paint, which will be too messy for making neat dots. Make sure paint is completely dry before you proceed with wrapping.

3. The gift is ready for giving with just the patterns and a tag, or add some nice ribbon to dress it up. You can also write the recipient’s name on the paper and then make a pattern around it.

4. You can choose any ink color or paint that stands out against the paper

Confetti and Cellophane

You will need:

• Plain paper

• Cellophane sheets

• Puncher

• Colorful or metallic paper

How to:

1. Wrap the gift first in plain paper, then wrap in cellophane. Leave one side open.

2. Create confetti by using a puncher or cutting squares from the colorful or metallic paper. You can also use metallic pre-cut confetti.

3. Slip the confetti between the gift and the cellophane. You can opt to write the recipient’s name or a holiday greeting either on the plain paper or on the cellophane using a marker.

Pretty as a picture

• Old catalogs, magazines, or an old copy of Sun.Star Cebu
How to:

1. Use some printed material as wrapper. Choose one with a nice print, then hand-write the person’s name on the front.

2. For paper with lots of print, pick a solid ribbon and plain tag to help the recipient’s name stand out.

You will need:

• Plain paper

• Patterned tape or stickers

How to:

1. For a super easy way to dress up a present, use those stickers you’ve probably got lying around the house, or that patterned tape you kept meaning to use for a scrapbooking project but never got around to.

2. Do any pattern you want, from simple lines to criss-crossing ones.
