Soft and sweet-A A +A

SWEET and pretty clothes in sorbet colors and comfortable shapes feel young, feminine and romantic.
Designer Mara Dado created these pieces for a graduation fashion show of the Fashion Institute of Design and Arts Cebu. Mara and her mother, Angela, both completed a one-year fashion design course before they decided to open their own shop, Disegno Dado.
For this collection, Mara took basic silhouettes and played around with different color combinations, prints and textures in sweet, muted shades of brown, mocha, beige, pink, white and cream. The color scheme reminded her so much of ice cream that she decided to call this collection “A la Mode.” She said she wanted these clothes to be very versatile: “The pieces can look anywhere from quirky to sophisticated, depending on how they’re styled.”
A mid-thigh cream-colored dress features three-quarter sleeves and a soft, off-center bow around the neck. Fringed fabric was bias-cut to create a simple and wearable form, with Swiss-dotted chiffon for the shoulders and sleeves.
A different take on the same cream colors and Swiss-dotted fabric is a full-length dress with a softly gathered high neck and an oversized accent bow to the side. Simple blush-hued chiffon was cut into a mermaid skirt for this piece.
Another dress with a mermaid skirt is the wedding dress Mara designed for her graduation collection, styled differently here with printed chiffon draped loosely over the top.
For a short one-shouldered cocktail dress, blush pink chiffon was paired with mocha Georgette fabric for a two-toned piece with ruching on the bust and a double-layered skirt.
A robe-type dress with a deep V-front and a floor-length skirt with a center slit can be worn on its own, or layered over another piece, such as this two-tone halter pleated cocktail dress in brown and mocha Georgette fabric. A sleek metal belt adds accent without making the outfit too busy with prints and layers.
With a play on soft silhouettes, ice cream colors and textured fabrics in this collection, Mara achieves wearable clothes with a youthful but elegant feel that appeals to women in their teens to their mid-20s.
