COMPETITION. This Friday, Jan. 10, is the start of the seven-night Sinulog Idol singing competition at the Fuente Osmeña Circle where 12 young and budding performers will vie for major prizes and the chance to make it big in the entertainment industry in the future. Personally, we have been and will continue to be part of this annual event being its emcee since its birth five years ago. We have seen the participation and “graduation” of the competition’s 60 previous contestants and we are glad to note that most of them are now making waves as entertainers in their own right.

Friends. What makes this yearly competition an amazing undertaking is the fact that all of its participants, while fiercely competing against each other, remain as close friends. Yes, they all aim for the much-coveted title of Sinulog Idol but they don’t treat the singing contest as a race but as an opportunity to strengthen their friendship. How about romantic relationship involving some of its participants? Yes, some of them are into it but that’s another story.

Judges. All Sinulog Idol contestants, previous and present, should consider themselves very lucky because of the event’s three perpetual judges whose comments and suggestions have been and are very helpful in guiding them to improve their onstage performance. Recording artist and former Pinoy Dream Academy scholar Apple Abarquez, entertainment columnist and broadcaster Ryan Mark Borinaga and vocal coach Jay Unchuan should be commended for graciously sharing with the contestants their expertise. The annual competition is a project of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. Ably managing it are Gani and Gloria Villarojo and their staff of Soundtraxx Production Studio.

Exciting. This year’s Cebu Popular Music Festival— a.k.a. Cebu Pop, on Jan. 17 at the Cebu Coliseum—is going to be an exciting treat for the general public. One of the reasons is the introduction of three different genres or categories that the singers have to interpret, plus the revival of the live band accompaniment to the songs. We also heard that a very special guest performer will grace the occasion but we are not at liberty yet to name him or her. The Cebu Pop, now on its 34th year, is the brainchild of former Rep. Eduardo Gullas who heads the Cebu Arts Foundation Inc. We are privileged and honored to act as its perpetual emcee.

Album. We are happy to receive a copy of a brand-new album containing 14 compositions that songwriter Fr. Vic Felisilda Amplayo, OSA wrote and produced. He tagged them as Theme Songs of Life and Love. Among them are the theme songs of the local World Youth Day since 2009 up to 2012 like Growing Together in Grace and sung by Apple Abarquez; Witnesses of Hope by Ana Feji; Firm in Faith by Ryan Racal; and Do All Things in Love again by Abarquez. The album also features the theme song of the Commission on Youth’s Barkadahan ni Pedro, a fan page on Facebook wherein one can post a prayer intention and those who “like” it pray with the one posting it. The title is Barkada ni Pedro and is interpreted by a group that Fr. Amplayo organized. Its members are Deserie Soscano, Joemar Paran, Jun Bolo, Juville Quijoy, Jessica Gako, Mary Ann Jamisola, Kiking Pagente, Mark Dospueblos, Yangyang Regis and Nadia Briones.

Others. Three other groups are also involved in the making of this album and we are referring to the Mohon Community Choir, Talisay City College-BSEd English Majors III History Class and the Young Angels Choir. We find all the songs very uplifting and nice to hear so we suggest that you secure your own copy of the album from the Sto. Niño de Cebu Parish Pastoral Council in Mohon, Talisay City. You may also call 273-2894, 511-3781 and 0915-843-5496 before going there.
