Fetalvero: Timely resolutions for all

-A A +A

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

WE CANNOT control the rising and the setting of the sun. We cannot control where it should rain heavily. We cannot control the tide, and we have no control over the passing of time.

When we make our New Year’s resolution, the first question to ask is this: Do we have control over the matter? If the answer is in the positive, then go ahead with your resolve. Should it be in the negative, do not bother.

For our politicians, top on the list should be this: We will not dip our fingers into the government’s coffers. For government employees: We will be more cordial. As for Janet Lim Napoles: I will tell the whole truth.

For businessmen: We will consider our social responsibility and start to abide with the minimum wage law. For our lawmakers: We will pass bills that are more relevant and enforceable. For the entire Filipino citizens: We will start to follow traffic rules, and the laws of our country.

As for our law enforcers: We will protect the citizenry, even if it will cost us our lives and (we will) refuse to accept money from syndicates.

For the department heads of the Land Transportation Office: We will limit the issuance of franchises for public utility vehicles, and we will have stricter rules in giving franchises. Furthermore, we will not hesitate to cancel franchises from erring operators.

To those who manage our national crisis, I have this anecdote: I have one electric fan at home. It is Philippine-made, so I bought it in order to patronize our own product.

After a couple of months of being used, it no longer functions quickly when I press any of the keys to start it. Wait for a couple of minutes, and it will start rotating! Unfortunately, by then I have already left the room to attend to my other chores.

(As an analogy) the point is, when relief reached the typhoon victims, some of the victims had already left either for Manila or for Cebu.

The resolve (of our leaders) must sound like this: Speedier relief, no politics. As for Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas and Tacloban City Mayor Romualdez: We will be on top of the situation and not under it. Imagine what the Philippines will be like when all of these resolves are made and followed.
