ANNUALLY, Zonta Clubs International marks November as “Say No to Violence Against Women and Children” month. This activity is the kick off for the 16 days of activism to eliminate violence against women and children. Locally, the Zonta Clubs of Cebu 1 and 2 jointly sponsored a forum called "Beating the Punch... Strategies to End Violence Against Women, Dangoyngoy sa Kahilum 5.”

The early afternoon activity was held at the Capitol Social Hall which was, early on, already abuzz with action-fired Zonta ladies clad in fiery orange attire (the color of “No To Violence”). They were busy registering the close to 200 attendees. It was quite a huge number basing on Zonta standards.

Very visible were members of the Women’s Desk of the local Policewomen’s Force, Volunteer Service Overseas Youth Chapter, with British and Filipinos and various organizations whose concern is protecting women against all types of violence.

Dynamic speakers were chosen for this delicate and relevant topic. With her arresting presence, Dr. Russell Makiling immediately drew attention to the subject at hand as she tackled day-to-day women’s issues from violence in the home, to the workplace and even beyond. Teresa Fernandez, on the other hand, focused on the dangers of domestic violence, whether emotional, physical and even financial in on society in general.

Zonta’s special guests were Hong Kong-based district governor Winnie Teoh and Lt. Gov. Lalivan Kanchanachari and from the metropolis Dr. Lyn Alentajan, advocacy chairperson; district treasurer Baby Perez and Area 1 director Atty. Daisy Arce. Loudly cheered were members from Zonta Club of Tacloban, very recently hit by killer typhoon Yolanda.

Kudos club president Naomi Zelent!

If the response of the attendees was a gauge, then Zonta can claim that it was instrumental in drawing attention to the growing cancer infecting the third world—violence against women and children. Credit should also go to the active club presidents: Lucille Colina, Zonta 1 and Myrna Tan, Zonta 2.
