Revising the school calendar

-A A +A

THINK about the phrase “Back to School” but not in June. Recently, people were abuzz about the plan of four of the country’s biggest universities to move the opening of classes for a new academic year from June to August. This is to make way for the ASEAN integration opening opportunities for the mobility of students in terms of studying here and abroad. The Commission on Higher Education has already formed a technical working group to study this proposed shift, which reflects the government’s “openness” to this change. What do some of our readers think about this?

Yes, because that would mean that our school year would start at the same time as schools in the US, which means I would have more opportunities to actually spend time with my brother who is studying abroad.
Shadder Lim, 19, advertising arts student (USC)

The change will benefit the Filipino students since the suspension of classes due to weather disturbances during the months of June and July will be less frequent. Secondly, trainings and programs for skills enhancement are usually done during this time. Thirdly, the Philippines as a member of the ASEAN should synchronize with the region in preparation for the integration this 2015. Furthermore, I believe that good quality of education is important in producing world-class Filipino graduates who are competitive enough to face a demanding and challenging world.
 Eleazar Martini Manalili, 25, businessman

I don’t agree with the idea of moving the start of the school year from June to August or September because it does not make a lot of difference. Avoiding the rainy season from June to August will not totally benefit everyone because heavy rains with flooding also occur beyond September.
