AUTISM was once a feared, misunderstood neuro-developmental disorder that often manifests among affected children in infant or toddler age. Today, there is better understanding of the condition in the community.

Educational and health institutions continue to enable themselves to meet the special requirements of persons with autism. Government, the business sector, the communication industry and socio-civic organizations have stepped up to share in the efforts to protect the rights of persons with autism and provide greater awareness about autism.

Starting yesterday, Jan. 26, up to Feb. 1, the 18th National Autism Consciousness Week is observed in the Philippines with the theme, “Katuparan ng Karapatan ng Pilipinong May Otismo: Isulong Mo, Ngayon Na!”

The activities kicked off yesterday with a 9 a.m. mass for children with autism at the North Wing of SM City Cebu.

After the mass, a special blessing of the children, their parents and families, teachers, therapists and other professionals involved in the care of persons with autism was held.

The traditional autism walk around the mall followed, which was participated by contingents from various schools, centers and socio-civic organizations. Children with autism were able to participate in adaptation activities at the mall’s supermarket and Storyland from 10:30 a.m. until noon.

More adaptation activities will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. also at SM City Cebu.

The culminating activity set on Thursday, Jan. 30, from 1-5 p.m. will be held at the SM Entertainment Centre. It will showcase the talents of children with autism from various schools and centers in Cebu.

The Cebu leg of the 18th National Autism Consciousness Week is spearheaded by the Autism Society Philippines–Cebu chapter, supported by SM City Cebu and SM Cares.
