Dressing for the Wooden Horse

-A A +A

HAPPY Chinese New Year to all! It’s a time for some to visit the temple and pay respects, or just get together with family and friends.

Tired of the same old red dress you’ve been wearing year after year? Red is always a lucky Chinese color, but there are other ways to get into the theme of the Year of the Wooden Horse. Here are some ways to incorporate this year’s lucky color palette into your wardrobe.

Green is considered the luckiest color for this Lunar New Year. A green dress with a horse print captures it perfectly. A band around the waist and an easy skirt shape make this a comfortable choice that flatters all body types.

Blue is considered another good color to wear this year since it supports the earth element. A vibrant shade like royal blue will look great with green, brown and gold pieces. It’s both bright enough and neutral enough to be worn with most other colors in the wardrobe. A platform is easier to wear than a stiletto heel.

Brown is another recommended color to wear, since wood is part of the earth element, just like green. It can look a little drab as a large swatch of fabric, but brown is a perfect color for a bag that will work with all your outfits, including that green printed dress. Choose one in a sturdy shape but with surprising details, like studs.

For the Chinese, gold is a lucky color to wear any time of the year. Don’t feel limited to wearing it just as jewelry, though.

Gold jeans make a good neutral to have in the wardrobe; they’re more special than everyday khakis, and easier to wear than gold leggings. Choose a pair with slim-cut legs, but check that they are not too tight. Pair them with other neutrals that have special details for a look that’s both luxe and laidback.
