Costanilla: 10 Elvis Presley impersonators-A A +A

COMMENDABLE. Undeniably, we are biased for local talents or entertainers who utilize Cebu-made musical instruments like guitars and ukuleles in their performances. And as we have written here last week, we commend former Compostela mayor turned songwriter and singer Ritchie Wagas for featuring the ukulele in his debut album, Gugmang Ayayay.
If we are not mistaken, he is the first local artist to focus the spotlight on this tiny musical instrument. At any rate, Wagas informed us that he just launched the Ritchie Ukulele Facebook page and surprisingly, it continues to enjoy a substantial number of likes. According to him, this reinforces his radio campaign over dyRT 99.5 FM although another station, Power 89.1 FM, is also committed to help promote his maiden album.
Jamming. Having more time now for music than politics, Wagas is also doing regular jamming sessions in various restobars and hotels here like The Outpost, Papa’s Grill, Sailors’ Log, Koa Tree House, Casa Escaño, Casino Español, Castle Peak Hotel and Manggahan. He is also encouraging the public to grab copies of Gugmang Ayayay while there are still some available. You may visit Wagascrafts at Ayala Center Cebu anytime.
Show. We were able to discuss with sports columnist-cum-singer Raffy Uytiepo about his plan to organize a show in Cebu featuring at least 10 Manila-based Elvis Presley impersonators. Uytiepo, himself a Presley impersonator, is known as the Elvisaya or Elvis of the Visayas. We told him that if this plan pushes through, it could be considered as a very exciting musical treat for all. This planned show has not yet been done here.
Convention. Some officers of the Cebu chapter of the Publishers’ Association of the PhilippinesInc. (Papi) are attending the club’s national convention in Isabela province next week. We wish them success. Among those who have confirmed to attend are club president engineer Greg Senining, vice president for the Visayas Andy Manatad, treasurer Loy Jurado, legal advisers Atty. James Lobedica and Atty. Raymond Alvin Garcia, secretary Jun Basadre, columnist Efren Lonzon and directors Paulus Marie Cañete and Sonny Gabiana. Nutribiz International chair Manny Zanoria, general manager Aurora Zanoria and president Tim Cabelin are also joining the Papi Cebu officers in their trip.
Speaker. We also gathered from Senining that during the convention, he will speak on the basic rules of parliamentary procedures. He is the charter president of Papi Cebu and is handling a 30-minute commentary program over Bantay Radyo, titled Tingog Sa Lungsod, the longest-running talk program in Cebu.
Entries. We saw all the entries to this year’s Sinulog short film and video documentary competition and found them to be delightful. The planned increase in the cash prizes as well as the honor of winning should encourage local filmmakers, particularly those aspiring ones, to come up with quality productions.
Cebu Pop genres. Talking of competitions, we now announce that for next year’s Cebu Popular Music Festival, the genres or categories that local songwriters should prepare for are Cebuano rock, hip hop and pop ballad. We encourage them to prepare their songs as early as now because the deadline for submission of entries is July 31.
