MORE than 1,500 individuals benefited from a free dental mission recently conducted by the Kanagawa Alliance of Dental Volunteers Overseas (Kadvo) and the Cebu Dental Society (CDS) at Pasil Elementary School in Barangay Pasil, Cebu City.
More than 100 dental volunteers, 63 of them are Japanese nationals, from Japan and the Philippines participated in the 31st joint dental mission.
CDS president Ma. Paciencia Belarmino said they used state-of-the-art equipment for the mission.
Fifty percent of the recipients were pupils of the school, while the others are residents of Barangay Pasil.
The residents were given appointment slips to set the schedule of the services they wanted to avail themselves of.
The volunteers visited Pasil prior to the mission date to list down the names of the recipients who wanted to avail themselves of the free dental services.
The services included tooth restoration, denture fabrication, root canal therapy, radiographic examinations like X-ray. Free medicines were also distributed to the beneficiaries.
Dental health education program and fluoride treatment were also conducted to the grades 1, 2 and 3 pupils.
It was aimed at educating the children of the proper dental hygiene.
Dental kits, notebooks and other items were given to the children.
Sergio Damo, one of the founders of the mission, said that this year’s dental mission was the most sophisticated and modern because the equipment used were high-end.
“It (dental mission) is not only radical extraction, but in fact, the trend now is to conserve the teeth. If there are missing teeth, we restore with dentures,” said Damo.
He added that the mission “has served its purpose, trying to help the less fortunate brothers and sisters.”
The dental mission was also participated by the Southwestern University, Philippine Dental Association and Kanagawa University in Japan.
The joint dental mission was founded by Florentino Protacio and Monihiro Yamamoto. Jave Matugas, USJ-R Mass Comm Intern
