SHOW. We commend the Cebu United Radio & Television Artists (Curta) Corp. for coming up with a cultural revival show that features several old Cebuano/Visayan songs that aim to rekindle the love for our literary heritage. The club is composed of active, retired and semi-retired stage, radio and television writers, directors and talents whose main objective is to help each other in times of need. Their upcoming show, titled Pasiklap: Operetang Hilaw, is intended to raise money for the club’s medical aid fund so we are strongly endorsing it to the general public simply because of its very noble cause.

Performers. Curta Corp. is right in utilizing its own talented members as performers themselves. All of them have already appeared in various programs in the past so entertaining the public comes easy as far as they are concerned. We were able to talk to scriptwriter Cora Rosales-Jayma and director Nick Ampatin who told us that Baby Condeno, Dante Luzon, Jun Villarta, Adeline Talam, Enrique Fernandez, Bobsteel Bacalso and Matet Cabudlan are now ready for their respective numbers during the show. We also learned that Mayor Michael Rama and Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella will appear in a special number as manifestation of their full support for Curta Corp. and its noble aim.

Support. So let us all support Pasiklap: Operetang Hilaw by watching it on Saturday, Feb. 22, starting at exactly 7:00 p.m., at the Casino Filipino Teatro of Waterfront Hotel in Lahug.

Speakers. Two officers of the Cebu chapter of the Publishers’ Association of the Philippines Inc. (Papi) are slated to speak during the club’s 18th national press congress on Friday and Saturday this week in Cauayan City, Isabela. Papi Cebu chapter president engineer Greg Senining of Bantay Radyo will lecture on the basics in parliamentary procedures while legal adviser Atty. James Lobedica, who writes for Bisdak Magazine, will talk on the laws on libel. Both Senining and Cebu Catholic Television Network channel 47 talk show host Andy Manatad, who is also Papi Visayas vice president, will lead the Cebu delegation to the national confab.

Topics. We also gathered that the two-day event that Papi national president Luis Arriola will open has a number of very interesting topics. For example, Roger Garcia of Manila Standard will talk on ethical and responsible media reporting while Pastor Apollo Quiboloy of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ will take up media’s role in motivating people to move forward after major disasters. Good governance and media partnership for national development will be discussed by Isabela Rep. Rodolfo Albano III while media and grassroots empowerment will be tackled by Jose Osias of Balik-Probinsya Inc.

On a personal level, we felicitate our dear friend Masbate Gov. Dayan Seachon-Lanete who will be given a special plaque of recognition. She has fully developed her province into what it is now. We also laud Papi board chair Juan Dayang for inspiring all Papi chapters nationwide to exist actively.

Play. We failed to watch writer/director Al Evangelio’s one-act play The Gift during its staging last week at the CCTN channel 47 chapel due to a previous engagement. But we were told by actor Dante Luzon that the play was able to pool a substantial amount for the urgent surgery on Evangelio’s bleeding retina and we are glad to learn that the operation was successful. Luzon said playing his role in The Gift was a big challenge because he and fellow actors Maryrose Maghuyop, Emmanuel Mante and Jugie Gonzales-Ponce had only 11 days to memorize their long lines.

Hope. We are also hoping that Evangelio will continue to write and direct more plays in the future so that other local talents can be given the chance to shine onstage.

One-act plays are easier to mount. By the way, Evangelio would like to thank all those that watched The Gift, especially Margie Lhuillier, Rosebud Sala, Carmen Campbell, Bunny and Tash Pages, Atty. Ram Ceniza, Carmel Cabaero, Dr. Ester Velasquez and Dr. Warfe Engracia to name a few for their wholehearted assistance. Of course, CCTN channel 47 president Nonito “Tatay Dodong” Limchua and his lovely lady Nanay Diana should also be commended for providing the venue and other forms of support.
