Utzurrum: Red-letter days-A A +A
Wednesday, February 19, 2014
WE WERE almost trampled on by a Wooden Horse that greeted revelers who trooped to the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year recently. Of course, there were the traditional and colorful Dragon and Lion dancers with their leader and drummers galore! These all added to the festive and lively atmosphere.
The highlight of the festivity was the tossing of the seafood salad called Yee Sang for good luck. Marco Polo is the only hotel we know, that installs a giant salad bowl at the hotel lobby, where prominent personalities are invited to do the honors, armed with a giant chopstick.
The higher the salad is tossed, the luckier for the participants!
Naturally, a genuine, sumptuous Chinese New Year spread followed.
On the subject of celebrations, our good friend, Kingsley Benedict Medalla, who’s a Spanish-speaking call center executive, recently marked a day “red” on the calendar.
The “quirky” but novel and popular The Henry Hotel was the venue for the happy occasion. With dear family members, including an Iloilo-based sister, office colleagues and co-members of the Amigos de España, indeed Kingsley (Kings for short) had the time of his life!
Same time next year, Kings? Many more years!
“Milestone with Music” is a loving tribute to a grand dame of the medical profession (obstetrics and gynecology), a civic leader and active member of the Rotary Club of Cebu, charter president and founder of the Zonta Club of Cebu 1, a columnist (I read her columns).
Yes, she’s Dr. Suga Sotto-Yuvienco, who will turn a glorious 95 years old tomorrow, Feb. 21. On this auspicious occasion, she will be honored fittingly at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel at 6 pm. Advanced happy birthday, Tita Bebe!
