Light Sunday

TODAY we glorify Christ’s triumph over the cross. Jesus had to undergo so much suffering to fulfill the Holy Scriptures.

We have all met with suffering in our lives. We’ve also cried out in pain and often have nearly given up on God when we thought God did not hear our pleas of “Tama na. Sobra na!”

After Palm Sunday, as we followed the journey of Jesus starting from the last supper, we saw Jesus wash the feet of the apostles so we too can follow His example of service to others. We felt the pain of being betrayed with a kiss of a friend. We went up to the Garden of Gethsemane where His disciples could not even keep awake to accompany him. We could feel the havoc of emotions which beset the Jesus Christ who become human to save us.

From the time when Pontius Pilate allowed Jesus to be scourged, crowned with thorns, flogged up to His crucifi xion we saw the terrible suffering Jesus had to undergo. Dying on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice the son of God did for all of us.

Today we rejoice! We now are fully aware that we too will be a part of the resurrection of the dead because Jesus Christ said so.

Today we will be spending time with our families, hunting for Easter eggs or flying kites or going to the beach. Before we do that, how about reflecting on the fact that Jesus died on the cross to give us a chance to be with him in his Kingdom to occupy the rooms prepared for us.

The retreat we had up the hill at the Redemptorist Retreat house prepared us so well to accept humbly how much God loves us. If Fr. Pons Suico had his way he would wrap his cassock around all of us in his desire to make us meet such a loving God, such a forgiving God and such an understanding God.

We all saw the picture Fr. Pons drew for us when God, in his love for all of us, simply said: “Peace be unto you” during his first meeting with his disciples.

He could have berated them and said, “Oh you of little faith! Why did you ran away? Couldn’t you have trusted me?” But that is never God’s way! After introducing us to a self-emptying God who died on the cross out of love for us, we felt so loved and so wanted by God that we who were there wanted to hold unto Fr. Pon’s cassock and go with him immediately to
meet an all loving, all wanting, all patient God.

We were a varied group. We didn’t stop to count how many we were. We only knew that we were there because we were hungry for even just a glimpse of who God really is. As the three days neared its end, we saw Jesus in the sharings of our small groups as people recounted the times they felt God’s presence in times of suffering or death. We saw God in each other as we treated each other with respect and love even if we just met for the fi rst time.

Best of all, we saw the greatness of God as Fr. Pons sincerely connected dots for us to follow and see how God prepared himself and us so we could meet in the culmination of his suffering.

Today is really a beautiful day. Without God’s resurrection we would probably rot six feet under the ground and who knows what. Today, we know
for sure that we too shall rise again to live with God in his Kingdom forever! Isn’t that great? Isn’t that worth looking forward to? The season of Lent gave us time to refl ect on God’s love and our response to
God’s love.

Take a good look at your families, your friends and even your acquaintances. Look at them with joy and hope. We know that because of Christ’s triumph over the cross, one day we will be able to enter God’s kingdom.

This is not the end of our world. One day we shall all be embraced by a loving God and met with these words: “Take the rooms my father prepared
for each one of you.” Isn’t that prospect great? Isn’t that reason enough to rejoice? Alleluia! Happy Easter Sunday!
