THE text message from Psalmstre Enterprises president and chief executive officer Jim Acosta last Friday, asking me to join him in Lapu-Lapu City, caught me by surprise. I had no idea he was in town and was in fact sitting as a judge in the Hari ng Lapu-Lapu male beauty pageant.

I caught the awarding ceremonies of the top five winners. Acosta’s choices as the company’s special awardees landed in the top three slots. John Paul Preston, who was chosen as Mr. New Placenta, was adjudged second runner-up. Lorenzo Bacaltos, Mr. Showbiz Sosyal, was chosen first runner-up.

Frenche Malimat Petallo, Mr. Olive-C, is this year’s Hari ng Lapu-Lapu. The two other winners are Alvin Arranguez, third runner-up and Cyde Gail Magalso, fourth runner-up.

The other judges were 2013 Mr. International third runner-up Gil Wagas, former Bb. Pilipinas-World Karla Bautista-Siao, Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Queenie Amman, Roy Igot and Mathieu Salem.

Incidentally, Gil Wagas was chosen by Jim as Psalmstre’s new brand ambassador. A fourth year student in hotel and restaurant management (HRM) at the University of Cebu-Main Campus, Gil will be more visible judging contests, attending shows and other activities to represent the company.

On the second night of the Kadaugan Street Party (KSP), Gil displayed his HRM skills by personally attending to customers, including Jim and me, patronizing his group’s food and drinks tent.

Gil did not show any star complex while serving food and drinks. He also took time to pose for souvenir shots to customers and passers-by who recognized him.

This early, he is showing positive signs of being a good brand ambassador.

On that same night of the KSP, it was my turn to sit as a judge, this time for the Kahayag Float Parade (after judging the street dancing and Rayna Bulakna beauty search in separate years). Since it was the contest’s first outing, there were only seven entries.

Despite that, the entries were still very competitive in design, creativity, artistry and other factors. What some entries overlooked though was what the name of the contest which centers on the use of environmentally friendly lights which carried a big percentage in the criteria.

So it is expected that in next year’s edition, the floats will be more attractive with the imaginative use of LED lights.

While the parade was going on in the streets, out there on the stage near the Lapu-Lapu City Hall, pretty, shapely and witty ladies fought it out for the title of Rayna Bulakna 2014. Bulakna was the wife of Hari Lapu-Lapu, the country’s first hero who successfully resisted foreign invasion.

Congratulations to Elaine Josette Ybañez, who bagged the coveted crown. Likewise to Rose Steve Cortes, Jessica Sollano, Tara Trisha Merced and Shai Morales who placed first to fourth runners-up, respectively.

Kudos too to the special awardees: Clint Shanone Arriesgado, Congeniality; Nicole Michie Camocamo, Photogenic, Most Lighted and Best Solo Performance; and Shai Morales, Group Performance.

Although I was not able to witness this year’s Rampada street dance competition, the successful staging did not escape our knowledge. Thus, it is but proper to congratulate March Mandal, the artistic director, and to Harry Don Radaza, the father of Rampada, for a job well done.

Radaza is humble enough to acknowledge publicly our small contribution through suggestions in the Rampada conceptualization stage. I’m honored and flattered! Thank you so much, Sir Harry, and more power!

After the success of Da Possessed in the box-office, Star Cinema is determined to pursue its thrust of entertaining the Filipino-movie lovers by releasing the Kim Chiu-Coco Martin starrer Maybe This Time on May 14 and the Erich Gonzales-Enchong Dee top-biller Once A Princess on May 28.

Vis-Min Promo Diva Josie Pereyra takes pride in announcing this, sans last-minute changes by Star Cinema top management. In July, the much-anticipated Kathryn Bernardo-Daniel Padilla starrer She’s Dating A Gangster will finally be shown.

So keep patronizing Filipino movies and play a big part in making local show business flourish.
